Do you clean your own home?

I am sure my post today will be unpopular with some, but it is something that I don’t understand…at all.

Why do women that do not work outside the home need a cleaning service?  Now some might say “well if they can afford it, why not?”  I guess I feel it is wasteful.  Is it a status symbol?

I have a neighbor with a four-year old daughter.  She does not work outside the home, her daughter goes to daycare several mornings a week, yet every Monday morning I see her cleaning lady drive up to her house and unload all her cleaning supplies.  Now some might say…are you jealous?…hell yes, I am jealous.  I work 40+ hours a week and have a very messy dog in the house.  I would love some help in the cleaning department.

I know many people have cleaning services.  So it is not an anomaly, but wow, is that really necessary when you are home all day every day?  What are you doing if you are not cleaning your house?

I don’t get it…I just don’t get it.

Do you clean your own home?…now you are afraid to tell me aren’t you.

  • We clean our own home. It is just the two of us. But when we are having company come to stay, we have been known to pay for a cleaner to come in and do the deep cleaning, like shampooing the carpets and the really grimy things I just can’t stand doing. But other than that, no, we do it ourselves.

  • I am a SAHM and clean my own house because I have to. If we had the money, I would pay. I don’t like it and there are many, many more things I could do instead. Like decorate my house, bake, garden, shop, spend time with friends, spend time with my kids, etc. I do all of those things now in addition to the cleaning but I would love to do it more:-)

  • I suppose if I could afford it I would enjoy someone else coming in and cleaning the bathroom and washing the kitchen floor – I’m just not fond of cleaning. But I’ve always done it myself, when I was a SAHM and for the last 20 years working over 40 hours a week. To me it would be a luxury. But affording it is relative – to some people it would be a priority to afford it. So it might come down to – would it be more like paying your electric bill – or is it more like paying for a spa day? And I have found people’s priorities sure run the gamut these days!

I work part-time and have a cleaning service. It started when I worked full time and then when I quit I did it myself. When I went back to work part-time I started the cleaning service again. Yes, I can afford it but more than that it saves me with no sore back and shoulder pain after I have cleaned the bathroom.

My neighbors around me have staff but I actually enjoy cleaning my house, it’s therapeutic. I turn on the music and just go for it. I have had cleaning people come by in the past, but they could not make the house clean to my liking. After going through several companies, I just decided to do it myself the way I like it. Besides, growing up Sat. mornings we cleaned the house from top to bottom and then watched cartoons. I guess it’s ingrained in my system. Now I do the same with my family. Music on, get to work, done. Next play hard!
