We lost her on a Wednesday.
I picked up Bogey at work and we drove home. We came into the house and I saw Bramwell as I walked into the family room. He came to greet us. I turned to the crate we keep Charlotte in and opened the door. I was numb. I carried her upstairs to the bathroom and got into the bathtub with her. She had diarrhea and we wanted to give her a nice bath so she was clean. Bogey and I dried her off and proceeded to take her outside into the back yard to wait. We had one of her two pillows lying on the ground for her to rest on. At the last minute I said to Bogey “let’s take one last walk with her and Brammy”. We got out her stroller and I picked her up and put her in the stroller and we started off on our regular walk. We got half way down the road and we saw a large pick-up truck coming toward us. Bogey said I think that’s them. As the truck got closer we saw that it was our Vet and his assistant. We told them we would finish our walk and be at our house soon. We walked all the way to the end of the road and came back. When we got back to our house, the Vet and his assistant were sitting on the tailgate of the truck. We lead them to the back yard. I lifted Charlotte out of her stroller and placed her on her pillow. The Vet told us what to expect. I asked him how he would know that she was gone. He said he would check for her pulse and heartbeat. He told us it would be quick. Bogey and I were holding Charlotte telling her how much we loved her and that we didn’t want her to suffer anymore. Bramwell was walking around us. Bogey kept saying to Charlotte “I’m sorry, I’m sorry, I’m sorry” over and over. I kept saying to Charlotte “I love you so much, I love you so much,…” The Vet gave Charlotte her shot and in less than one minute she was gone. She left us quietly at approximately 1:00 that afternoon. The Vet, his assistant and Bogey carried our little girl to the truck and laid her gently onto the floor of the back seat. I followed with Bramwell. Bogey gave Charlotte one last kiss and then I kissed my sweet little puppy girl goodbye. Bramwell walked up to Charlotte and gave her one last sniff (his way of saying goodbye).
We lost her on a Wednesday.
Oh my, I’m glad you got to say good bye to her at your own home in a comfortable setting. Still – so tough!
Charlotte was surrounded by those she loved and who loved her. That’s all any of us can hope for, I think.
I am glad that you were with her when she passed. She knew that she was loved.
That is just heartbreaking!
She is so lucky to be loved and cared for by the three of you. It is such a heartbreaking memory.
