I was having lunch today at Jimmy John’s.  I was reading while I ate my sandwich.  In the booth next to me was a family of four.  Mother, father, their 2-year old son and his grandmother.  You know how children tend to turn to the next booth and just stare at you.  Well that’s what this sweet, handsome, blond-headed little boy was doing.

I didn’t notice him right away, but you know how sometimes you just feel like someone is watching you…well that’s how I felt.  So I looked up and there he was.  So very sweet.  He kept watching me and watching me and watching me.  I finally smiled and said hello.  He just kept watching me.

I had also bought a chocolate chip cookie.  While I was eating it, he turned to his mother and said cookie.  At first she didn’t understand, then he said cookie again.  She finally understood him, but still wasn’t sure what he was trying to tell her.  She eventually turned around and looked my way.  I smiled and said, I think he wants a cookie.  She asked her son, do you want a cookie, he said, yes.  She tried to get him to say please, but it was a difficult task.  Eventually she bought him a cookie, but told him that they would all share the cookie. I don’t think he understood her, but when she broke off a piece of the cookie and gave it to him, he was happy.  He kept watching me while he ate his cookie and I ate my cookie.  Eventually I went back to reading my book.

The most amazing thing happened next.  I looked up at him and he was holding his chin in his hand.  Which looked very odd for a boy his age (2 years old).  He then moved his hand to a new location on his face.  All of a sudden it dawned on my…he was mimicking me.  He was watching my hands while I was reading and copying me to a T.  His grandmother realized what he was doing at the same time I did.  We both started laughing.

I said, I have never seen a child that young mimic hand gestures like that.  It was quite fascinating.  It was the cutest thing.

At that moment I had a thot…I would love to get a photo of him mimicking me, but did not think it was a good idea to ask the parents if that was okay.  It would have been a nice addition to this blog post though.  Since I didn’t get that boys photo, you will have to be satisfied with this…
